A Waterfi'd Englishman
A Waterfi'd Englishman

I guess when you think about it, an Englishman using a waterproofed iPod sounds rather logical. After all, we are the nation with various analogies and some quite literal phrases such as "as right as rain," "it's raining cats & dogs," and my personal favourite "it never rains, but it pours!" All of which are embedded into our nations general lexicon...

A Kick in the Face and the Determination to Go Forward
A Kick in the Face and the Determination to Go Forward

From where I stand on the shores of Mirror Lake, the water appears serene and soft. The kayaks and canoes competing nearby in the Lake Placid International Regatta seem to glide along the surface. Off shore a few hundred feet, the colorful swim caps of athletes training for Ironman bob along from buoy to buoy.

"SARA!" I hear someone call to me. It can only be one person…Danny Arnold. His tall frame bounds down the hill, past startled rowers, and gives me an energetic hug! Danny and I are 1 day and 20 years apart in physical age, but in spirit one might venture to call Danny and I twins. We share a reputation for cheering and chatting with our fellow triathletes from start to finish line...

The Kick
The kick.

Simple right? Not so fast. When your legs are in shape, your body is in shape. I believe this goes not only in the water, but also out of the water. My head Santa Clara Swim Coach, Dick Jochums, always stressed on the legs. Want to feel like you're really in shape? Focus on the kick each swim workout...

Gizmodo Put the Waterproof Kindle Paperwhite Through Hell

Gizmodo took the Waterproofed Kindle Paperwhite through the ringer. Here's what they have to say about how it held up against their extensive testing.

"When we heard about Waterfi's custom waterproof Paperwhite, we were delighted at the prospect, but reserved final judgement until we could put it through the wringer ourselves. And after some highly scientific experimentation, we can confirm: This thing is a goddamn rock.

Of course, that it held up shouldn't come as a total surprise. Waterfi has plenty of experience in the gadget waterproofing game, with Fuelbands and headphones aplenty in its arsenal—all of which you buy directly from the company itself. The company covers devices inside and out with its "Dual Layer waterproofing process," but unlike some other waterproof-coating claims, the Waterfi's treatment doesn't change the look and feel of the end product. In the Kindle's case, the buttons are a little stiffer when it comes out of the (original packaging!) box, but Waterfi assured us through email that this goes away after about a month of use.

To start kick off testing, we gave our Paperwhite a simple water bath—no problems there. Since Paperwhites use capacitive touch, you obviously can't control it while physically underwater, but once we pulled it out, the few drops left on the surface didn't impair page turning to any noticeable degree.

Promising! So we decided to step it up a few notches; the grape soda, tomato sauce, vegetable oil, and honey notches, specifically..."

How Koalas Can Improve Your Front Crawl Stroke

The front crawl is the most common swimming style, and by far one of the most useful, powerful, and fastest of all swim strokes. It is most often utilized in freestyle swimming competitions, where swimmers are free to choose whatever style they want to swim in, leading the front crawl to become commonly referred to as freestyle...

Can Crossfit Help You Swim Better?

Most of us who swam for a Junior college or University experienced the "burnout" feeling towards the latter part of our career. It was a feeling of relief that we did not have to look at the skinny black line nonstop for 1,000's of yards of pain. There was a small minority who thrived on the sport and kept competing even after their intense college experience.

For me, I needed a new outlet; I was over swimming. It was a great sport which shaped me into the mentally tough athlete I am today, but it had worn so much on me I could care less if I ever jumped into a cold pool again for anything short of a cool off on a hot summer day...

Local news in San Diego has begun to take notice and ask questions

Big week here at Waterfi! The last few days a couple local News reporters have started asking questions about the waterproof gadgets they see around town and those reporting skills have led them back to Waterfi. Joe Little from San Diego ABC 10 soaked up some sun with our president Royce to get some answers.

Joe earned himself a very special place in our hearts for sacrificing that beautiful suit in the name of professional jounalism. Right behind the ABC 10 team was the CW San Diego 6 and Nancy Aziz

Kitesurfing with Pro Patrick Rebstock

How does the Waterfi stand up against the intense conditions of kitesurfing?!

Our buddy Patrick Rebstock's skills pretty much speak for themselves in this video. But in case you were wondering how the Waterfi withstands salt water or the more rigorous, challenging sports, here you go!

According to an article by kitesurf aficionado Jakob Jelling, kitesurfing dates all the way back to 13th century China when people were using Kitesailing as a "simple method of transportation" harvesting windpower to propel conoes and such. Over the centuries different forms of kites have been used to propel various types of vehicles over land as well as water. But It wasn't until the 1990's in Hawaii when kitesurfing--as it is more known today--was introduced to the surfing and wakeboarding community in Maui. Since then, it ihas become one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. An interesting fact about the dynamics of kitesurfing is that although kites do depend on the wind to achieve initial lift, once a kite is in the air it "manufactures its own wind, which is proportionately faster and creates a higher rate of speed for the vehicle."

Rest assured that no matter how much air you achieve or how hard of a salt watery-pounding you may take out there, the Waterfi will stay your ever faithful friend to keep you pumped.

The big Apple changes the gadget game again ...sort of

Apple had a press event today detailing some of its new product releases and updates. Everyone was expecting an iPhone 5 but Apple unveiled instead, among other things, the iPhone 4S—essentially the iPhone 4 only better. The 4S will be wicked fast, have a better camera, airplay/video mirroring, iCloud compatibility, and the list goes on. Thankfully, this release won't affect our plans to still release the waterproof iPhone 4 very soon.

On another note, some of you may have heard rumors about Apple planning to discontinue the iPod Shuffle. We've been contacted by a number of worried Waterfi users concerned about our intent to keep producing or at the least continuing to warranty waterproof shuffles we have already sold, should Apple decide to discontinue it. Apple mentioned nothing about discontinuing the shuffle line which we are certain they would have done at this event if that's what they were planning. Shuffle sales are just too good and they know it! So fear not dear customers! These rumors are false. Our #1 selling and #1 loved product will live on.

Apple also announced they are lowering the price of the iPod Nano. We did too.

Waterfi versus Liquipel

What is the difference between Waterfi and Liquipel? Read more to find out.

Following a very impressive showing at CES in Las Vegas, new company Liquipel has since received a lot of buzz about their waterproofing solution for cell phones. Waterfi has also received a lot of questions about what we think of Liquipel, if we do the same thing, etc. Although the concept seems the same and we do both offer water treatment services on electronic devices, there are some notable differences between the two processes and their applications, respectively.

Liquipel uses a vapor-based process that treats the device from the outside (with a nano coating that protects the inside and outside) whereas during the Waterfi process, we open up the device then use a special mix of compounds to seal off the insides. Liquipel states that their process makes the device "waterproof" on their website, however, they reccommend you don't purposefully expose your liquipelled device to any liquids--let alone allow your device to be sugbmerged--and they do not offer any warranty. Now keep in mind that water damage will void virtually any manufacturer's warranty.

A liquipelled phone will be great for accidental spills or talking on the phone in the rain, but it is not meant to be submerged in water for a long period of time or taken swimming like Waterfi products are. On the Liquipel website one can see various pictures of smartphones submerged in water, but Liquipel really only makes your phone water resistant not waterproof. We ensure the Waterfi process guarantees your device to be fully waterproof with our warranty and return policy.

Another big difference is that Waterfi and Liquipel are in different markets. Currently Waterfi specializes in just mp3 players, namely the iPod shuffle and iPod Nano, whereas Liquipel is focused solely on certain models of smartphones. We here at Waterfi are still working on perfecting the Waterfi process on our waterproof iPhone and certainly hope to offer the process on other types of phones a little further down the line.

So for now, if you need a waterproof mp3 player, you've come to the right place! If you are ok with just an accident-proof phone, you should try Liquipel and let us know how it goes! For the high amount of buzz Liquipel has been getting lately, there is a surprising lack of reviews out there from people who have actually had it done to their phone and whether or not it is durable, etc. But if you need a fully waterproofed phone, you will have to wait a little while longer. Keep checking back with us!

Lost and Found: Waterfi withstands 2 days of rain

A lucky customer recovers her iPod in the backwoods of Florida after a two day rainstorm!

People are always asking us about the strength of our products. Can it withstand high and low temperatures? Can it really be submerged in water for a long period of time? Well one Waterfi customer has put it to the test for herself.

Long-time Waterfi customer, Dana, lives on a Florida State Park with her family who helps manage the park. She spends most of her time at the beach, fishing, and searching the woods for rare deer antler that naturally fall to the ground when deer shed them in the spring. Recently on one of her adventures into the woods, she lost her Waterfi shuffle. "I take my iPod everywhere," she told us, "I wear my pink iPod whenever I'm outside."

She and her husband went back the same day to search for several hours but all to no avail. The next two days the area saw a pretty big storm. Dana said it "POURED rain with lightning and wind"-- enough to keep them up at night.

When the storm cleared, Dana decided to go walk the woods again, hoping--but not really expecting--to find her ipod.

"After about 2 hours I FOUND the IPod! I couldn't believe it. I took pictures immediately just as I found it. When I picked it up and placed the earbuds in my ear and pressed "play", the music began (and I got the message...."battery low"). I recharged the Ipod and it works like brand new. I'm still in shock! If anyone doubts the quality of your product, I hope they will talk to me."

Dana has bought one for her whole family. "They LOVE them," she noted happily. Thanks for sharing with us, Dana. We want every Waterfi customer to be just as satisfied.

Dana's Waterfi right where she found it!

When we make your Waterfi, we strive to make it robust. So go ahead...put it to the test.

What do you do with your Waterfi? Do you have a crazy story? Tell us about it in the comments!

Down By the Bay: San Diego International Triathlon

We had a ball participating in our first ever expo this last weekend. Triathletes from all over the world stopped by to pick up a waterproof shuffle and check out a sneak peak of our new prototype of a waterproof iPhone 4.

Waterproof iPhone 4 release date is TBA. We also don't know whether or not we will offer this just as a service or whether we will sell the waterproof iPhone itself. We do know we will be producing them in such a way so that we may be able to offer a solid warranty on it. We always want to stand by all our products and guarantee them even through the harshest conditions—triathletes we are for you!

At the end of the day, we got to meet some really great, very active people, spread the word about Waterfi, freak out a good number of people who expressed their fear for the iPhone's life, and catch some beautiful rays down by the bay. Typical day at the office. San Diego is our town.
